World-wise Courses

We all like to put the world to rights and World-wise courses are a great way for people to do just that. The difference is that as well as discussing and finding out more about the big issues facing the world today, you can also get equipped to do something about it.

Series 1: Introduction to the issues - Getting the Skills and Confidence to Change the World

In the introductory ten-week series World-wise groups begin to explore some of the big global issues from their own local perspective and begin to build up the skills and know-how needed to bring justice to today's world.

The programme includes a session on justice and human rights and a media workshop. There will be an opportunity to meet local and global campaigners and find out more about the issues that really interest the group.

The series rounds off with a fun and sociable mini-campaigning event.

Series 2: Putting it into practice

The interests and needs of the group drive forward the programme for the second series as the World-wise group builds on the experience of the first series to plan, publicise and run a campaigning event or project of its own choosing.

This might involve:

  • organising a trade justice stall
  • organising a letter-writing event for Amnesty or hosting a local debate on global issues
  • supporting a local volunteer in a developing country
  • working towards making your village a fair trade zone

Whatever it is, the group finds ways to make it happen. Take a look at a sample project from World-wise Stirling, one of our 2005 pilot groups.

World-wise Quote

The two terms have been very different, but I want to do more. I’ve learnt how much ground a group can cover, not just one or two people working alone. I’ve got a boost from meeting other people and hearing their ideas. I’ve learnt new skills and now know those I’d like to develop.
