Mavuto Bamusi tour, November 2007

Mavuto meets with the local WDM group in Ayrshire
Last November, WDM sponsored the visit to Scotland of Malawian human rights campaigner, Mavuto Bamusi. Mavuto is the National Co-ordinator of Malawi's Human Rights Consultative Committee (HRCC), a network of civil society organisations advocating for local and international justice for Malawi.
WDM Scotland supports HRCC in many of the issues they work on, like the campaign against water privatisation and promoting accountability in institutions like the WTO and IMF.
Scotland has a long history of links with Malawi, and a substantial amount of its international development budget is focussed on the East African country.
During his visit, Mavuto met with WDM's local groups as well as parliamentarians to ask that Scotland's international development policies look beyond aid to the wider questions of global justice. Following on from this, WDM submitted evidence to a Parliamentary inquiry into international development, backing up Mavuto's concerns.
