WDM calls on industrialised countries to follow lead of Scotland on climate change

As the Scottish climate change bill passed its final parliamentary hurdle yesterday (June 24th), the World Development Movement called on other industrialised nations to take up the challenge of exceeding this in the run-up to the international negotiations in Copenhagen in December this year.

Liz Murray, Head of Campaigns in Scotland, at the World Development Movement said:

"Scottish politicians have shown leadership in passing climate legislation that should result in Scotland's greenhouse gas emissions falling dramatically in the coming years. This is what the science tells us is needed in the face of a global climate crisis. Other industrialised countries must now follow suit with their own commitments to drastic cuts and a determination to get a global agreement in Copenhagen in December that will really tackle dangerous climate change.

Scotland must now put in place the policies that will ensure that its emission reduction targets are met, for example by investing heavily in renewable energy and not building any new coal-fired power stations in Scotland."
