The G8 is the self-selecting summit of eight world leaders from Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the UK and the US.
The UK assumed the presidency of the G8 on 1 January this year and, for the first time, the annual G8 Summit is taking place in Scotland, at the Gleneagles Hotel between 6-8 July.
Tony
Blair has stated that he wants to focus on the challenges of Africa and
climate change at the Summit. We will be there to highlight how the UK Government
is currently part of the problem on many issues and needs to be part of
the solution. WDM's position is outlined in the briefing 2005
and Sustainable Development: Why the UK Government is Part of the Problem
(1.8 mb).
The G8 is not a legitimate institution to solve the world's problems - in fact it is the problem. It must recognise this and put its resources at the disposal of genuinely democratised multi-lateral institutions where poor countries have a right to a seat at the table rather than an invitation to dinner.
